DAY 1: Arrival
A thunderstorm at the airport delayed our departure by about an hour. Keflavik Airport featured long lines for both passport and COVID checks. These were perhaps the longest lines I ever waited in with maybe 200 people ahead of us on arrival for the passport check - and just as many behind us. But we made it and celebrated with Duty Free purchases (including rhubarb and blackberry liquors and birch snaps) before picking up our luggage and passing along in another line for the COVID check. Luckily, we were the first to arrive after a July 1 COVID policy change that allowed us to present proof of vaccination to enter the county without a test at the airport and a five to six hour wait for the result at our hotel before being able to enter the city as tourists.
We walked a bit around Reykjavik after our taxi ride to the hotel. We stopped for a coffee and later had lunch the Loki Café across from the cathedral. Attached are a few street scenes from our stroll. The best surprise was that the weather is warmer than expected. It was sunny and will be near 80 degrees Fahrenheit today. Usually the temperature is around 50 degrees!
